The story of how Jack Welch managed his own CEO succession at General Electric is regarded as a shining example of best practice. Over a five year period, Welch and GE groomed 3 potential successors concurrently, at the end of which the two unsuccessful candidates were so well prepared they were immediately snapped up to lead other corporations; the newly elected CEO Jeff Immelt has led GE with distinction ever since.
