After an external investigation Target has confirmed that it was over-inflating profits through complex accounting reconciliations and using rebates from suppliers. Yesterday in the UK discount department store BHS went into administration after years of woe, despite efforts to realign its brand. It is not only the SME retailers who are feeling the squeeze in the current climate.
Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder perfectly summed up the short-term profit boosting effort at discount department store Target when he said its creators were "mind blowingly stupid".
